American History (From NYPL- Articles and Databases)
This comprehensive database, offered by the New York Public Library provides source material for numerous American history topics. This resource is divided by time period, starting as early as 1350 and covering material up until the present. Each time period is accompanied by a topic heading. Each topic is subdivided into a number of subtopics. For someone interested in the Vietnam War, the most useful place to look would be “A Nation in Upheaval 1954-1975,” which includes a link that would take the user to material on the Vietnam War. From there, the user is directed to a page which includes a “Topic Overview.” Among the resources that are provided are documents (including speeches, letters, and quotes), media (including photos, audio, maps, and visuals), and what is described as “general resources” (including reference articles, biographies, timelines, facts and figures, and glossary terms). Under the “Analyze” section, one can click on “opposition to the Vietnam War” to learn more about the anti-war movement. A library card from NYPL is necessary in order to access this database.
