ALA’s Digital Literacy Task Force defines digital literacy as “the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills.” Evaluating data and sources of news, and understanding the way information is delivered online via hidden algorithms, are key to being a digitally literate student.
Digital literacy involves knowing digital tools and using them in communicative and collaborative ways through social engagement. Under the framework of digital literacy, the purpose of this Libguide is to introduce and contextualize three more literacies tangential to becoming strong and active citizens of the web—data, algorithmic, and news literacy.
Critical digital literacy involves a number of skills and dispositions that prepare a person for accessing information online. With the rise of "fake news" and the increasing number of business models that depend on the consumption of online content, citizens of the web need to know how to identify reliable sources of information, how to critically engage with data sets, statistics, and data visualizations, and how the information they receive online is targeted to them and may require further searching beyond what predictive algorithms deliver.
Building on the concepts of digital literacy, this Libguide provides resources on data, algorithmic, and news literacies.
